DJ Mark Bisson was born and raised in Swansea, Massachusetts. He relocated to the West Coast for college and graduated with a Doctorate of Optometry Degree in 1989. Since then he has resided in Long Beach California where he started Sea View Optometric Center (www.seaviewoptometric.com). Since then his practice has grown into one of the most successful in the area.

Besides Optometry, Mark enjoys other interests including travel, scuba diving, gardening, weight training, gymnastics, running and most notably, music. His passion for music began as soon as he started listening to the radio. He would save his money to buy the hit records he loved and would spend hours listening to them. While Mark enjoys a wide range of musical tastes, it was the advent of disco music that made a huge impact. The music, combined with the whole nightclub experience, had the ability to lift the spirit and transcend one to a whole other place.

DJ Mark’s primary objective each time he plays is to take you on an exciting journey through the music he plays. He follows the tradition of some of the early masters of the DJ craft like Larry Levan, Nicky Siano, and David Mancuso, along with current masters like Danny Tenaglia, Dimitri from Paris, Warren Gluck, and Susan Moribito. Rather than just “play songs”, Mark carefully chooses each successive song to create a story or message through the music. Each song, whether it be a vocal or instrumental, contains a mood or message, which transfers into an emotion.

When Mark plays, he aims to take you through many emotions, and yet leave you feeling uplifted and exhilarated by the end of his set.  This is the major reason Mark prefers not to play requests since that generally interrupts the story he is telling, analogous to a flat tire or mechanical breakdown on a road trip.

Mark’s musical catalog spans the past three decades and each time he plays, he incorporates music from the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s along with more current tracks. He enjoys all types of house music including disco, electronic, tribal, and progressive. Realizing how much music can re-stimulate great moments from the past, Mark strives to always incorporate great, often forgotten, songs into his sets that will bring back memories and touch the hearts of his listeners.

“…ultimately, disco was and is about  inclusivity and community, about pleasure and leisure rather than labor, about the democracy of the dance floor rather than the false idols of the stage. It was…a time when anything and everything could be united under the banner of the 4/4, when music was still about fun and not about survival.” From “Turn The Beat Around – The Secret History Of Disco” by Peter Shapiro

Let the music lift you up!

“There is actually a message in the dance, the way you feel, the muscles you use, but only certain records have that.  Say I was playing songs about music---“I Love Music” by the O’Jays, “Music” by Al Hudson---and the next record is “Weekend” by Phreek or Class Action. That’s about getting laid, a whole other thing. If I was dancing and truly into the words and the feeling and it came on, it might be a good record, but it makes no sense because it doesn’t have anything to do with the others. So, a slight pause, a sound effect, something to let you know it’s a new paragraph rather than one continuous sentence.” Quote from Larry Levan
